Did Democrats think they would beat Republicans by calling GOP primary winners "too extreme" to win a general?

Yes they did but then they are the party that said that we will know whats in a bill after they p it, in my opinion let them continue to think that was, as they will be easier to remove from office in Nov if they keep shooting themselves in the foot
