Satellite internet?

i have hughes net satellite internet 1.5mbps and im only getting about 256kbps download speed for site browsing and about 56kbps for software and update downloading. when they installed it the used a lot of extra cable. could this affect the speed im getting from the dish to the modem and to the computer? is there a way to fix that speed loss? i hate satellite internet... i wish there was something else i could get besides dial up. any suggestions?
