Court/small wedding, what should i wear?

My bf and I decided that we are going to do the small wedding this december with just our parents. He just came back from iraq a few months ago after 15 months! We will be holding the wedding at a nice restaurant where we are renting a banquet room and will have the ceremony and reception there. I will be 5 months pregnant by the time this takes place as he is currently away for army drill sgt school. We have another son together. Next year we plan to save up for our big wedding and invite family and friends. My question is this, I've been seeing a lot of cute dresses.. we talked about it and showed him a bunch of dresses in diff colors and styles (not white) and he said he'd liked the "feminine colors" like pinks and purples as opposed to dark ones or blues or grays and that white is more like the real big wedding thing..and maybe to save wearing white for our big event. I saw some cute colored dresses at David's Bridal and I also saw a really cute white one for only $100 more than the colored ones. I want to surprise him and wear this beautiful white simple dress! My question is, should I just wait to wear white for our big day next year... this one I am looking at is just a simple A-line dress and it's strapless. The one for next year will be a lot more elaborate for sure. Any ideas? Thank you much!
