How to make realistic muzzle flashes?

Well my friends and i decided to make a video. The editing is all done except for the muzzle flash and sound. Is there a software trial or freeware i can use to make an effect. Or is there away to do it in Movie Maker? Blood on the body would be nice but its not needed.
